Planning – Plot Requirements

At the beginning of the planning phase, it is important to decide on the location and cultivation method. Do you want to cultivate the plants directly in the ground or in a substrate?

Other important factors to consider are primarily the requirements of the plot. The most important aspects when choosing a location are irrigation options, soil conditions, and the site’s orientation. If possible, the selected plot should be sheltered from the wind.

  • When planning crop rotation, cereal crops such as wheat, barley, and corn are recommended as preceding crops, while crops like potatoes, sunflowers, or sugar beets should be avoided.

 

  • The lead time for purchasing a polytunnel should also be considered. The time required for consultation, delivery, and tunnel assembly should all be factored in.

 

  • In addition to the investment costs associated with purchasing a polytunnel, guaranteed sales are another advantage. Protected cultivation ensures reliable yields and a longer harvest period. Strawberries ripen approximately 15-21 days earlier, depending on the region. Compared to open-field cultivation, this method can yield 10-20% more produce.

  • To properly regulate water and air balance, the soil should have a loose structure. With sufficient nutrients, it’s important to note that the majority of the roots are located in the top 20 cm (8 inches) and can extend up to 100 cm (32 inches) into the soil. A soil test or analysis of previous crops can be very informative. Soil compaction must be avoided at all costs, as it leads to reduced yields. Waterlogging should also be avoided, as it can promote disease. If possible, a location prone to late frosts should be avoided.

 

  • Plugplants can be planted out from the end of July to the end of August.
